CAP Subchaser Painting
This artists rendering depicts a World War II German submarine off the eastern coastline of the United States, retreating under the watchful eye of a Civil Air Patrol pilot. Many of the original CAP pilots flew reconnaissance missions along the eastern coastline of the United States, watching for and reporting any activity from approaching German subs. Those courageous pilots came to be called subchasers, providing the 1940s version of homeland security for the nation. (Image courtesy of Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters)
