Exceptional Achievement Awards

Named in honor of the Air Force major considered by CAP historians to be the first Public Affairs officer to serve CAP at the national level in the '50s, the Maj. Howell Balsem CAP Public Affairs Exceptional Achievement Awards competition provides PAOs with the opportunity for recogition of outstanding achievement in a variety of categories. Read the criteria carefully, submit the appropriate materials in accordance with the directions given and remember to attach an entry form to each entry submitted.

Winners will be recognized during an awards luncheon on Aug. 6 in Kissimmee, Fla., featuring CNN correspondent Miles O'Brien as keynote speaker -- and you don't have to attend to be a winner! Good luck!

If attending, you may submit a total of 3 entries in any categories of your choice. If not attending the PAO Academy, you may submit 1 entry in any single category of your choice. There is no entry fee.

CATEGORIES

Writing for Media, Brochure/Poster/Flyer, Newsletter, Slide/PowerPoint Presentations, Web site, Photography, Media Coverage and Event Promotion/Crisis Management

Writing for Media:

A news release or feature story used by:
a. CAP Volunteer or CAP Online
b. a general interest newspaper, magazine, or newsletter
c. a TV or radio station
d. a military publication
e. a web site, not in conjunction with any of the above (blogs not eligible)

Provide a copy of the original news release and a copy of the article, transcript, CD or Web page. If used by a radio station, provide a CD, podcast or Web page link. If used by a TV or cable TV station, provide a VHS, DVD, podcast or web page link.

Brochure/Poster/Flyer

One or more color informational piece.
Provide a copy.

Newsletters:

Production of an ongoing newsletter used for a public affairs program by any CAP Squadron, Group, Wing or Region.
1. Hard copy format (if mailed to recipients)
2. Electronic format (only if e-mailed to recipients)
3. Web site format (if only posted on a Web site)
Include hard copies or CD-ROM of at least three consecutive issues to support a one-page typewritten summary that addresses planning/goals, content/creativity, technical excellence/quality and results. 

Slide/PowerPoint Presentations:

Provide CD or DVD.

Web site:

Content management of a Web site used for a public affairs program by any CAP Squadron, Group, Wing or Region.
1. External (open to the public)
2. Internal (password protected for CAP members only)
3. Online Media Room (navigation and use links specifically for reporters, editors and producers only)
Include screen grabs or copies of key pages to support a one-page typewritten summary that addresses planning/goals, content/creativity, technical excellence/quality and results. In addition, include the Web site URL for external sites, Web site URL and generic password to access internal sites and Web site URL for online media rooms.

Photography:

1. Image taken with camera and used by:
a. a large daily newspaper/wire service/magazine (more than 100,000 circulation)
b. a small daily newspaper/magazine (less than 100,000 circulation)
c. weekly newspaper
d. a newsletter
e. a Web site (blogs not eligible)
Provide j-peg attachment for newspaper, magazine or newsletter and clipping; URL for Web site.

Media Coverage of CAP:

1. Article written about CAP used by:
a. a newspaper/wire service/magazine (more than 100,000 circulation)
b. a small daily newspaper/magazine (less than 100,000 circulation)
c. a weekly newspaper
Provide a copy of the article written about CAP.

2. Podcast or video about CAP used by:
a. a radio station
b. a TV station

Event Promotion/Crisis Management:

1. A special program produced or for which assistance was provided.
Provide details of mission, plan and budget.

2. Assistance provided to the Commander in managing a specific controversy that had the potential to affect CAP.

3. Preparation of a PA plan/program that addressed an issue or crisis that could have had an extraordinary impact.

Awards entry guidelines:

For each entry submission, you must name your project and then describe concisely each of the main project elements listed below. Keep your descriptions short -- no more than three or four sentences for each element. The narrative may be written on a separate piece of paper and attached to the entry form.

Winners will be honored during the CAP PAO Academy Reception in Kissimmee, Fla. on Aug. 6, 2008. The keynote speaker will be Miles O'Brien, CNN's chief technology and environment correspondent.
